Pests in the Warehouse
DNA Barcoding Reveals Origin of Ants
In the food industry, the identification of pests is of crucial importance. A customer of BIO-TECH Betriebshygiene GmbH was confronted with accusations of being responsible for damage to delivered products. By using DNA barcoding, BIO-TECH was not only able to exonerate the customer, but also prove its competence in pest control.
Clarification of a Damage Claim
After receiving damaged goods, BIO-TECH's team was able to identify small insect fragments through microscopic examination, which were identified as ant parts. Due to the rarity of ant experts and the difficulty in distinguishing specific species, we were called in by AIM for genetic species identification.
And we found out: the ants came from a camp in Asia and had already made a long journey. The DNA analysis showed that it was a species that only occurs in the tropics and subtropics. This evidence enabled the customer to prove by DNA barcoding that the pests could not have entered the batch from the production facility's warehouses. The high claim for damages was averted. Our many years of experience and the ability to extract usable DNA even under difficult conditions make DNA barcoding a valuable resource in pest control.
